The Case for Corporate Wellness
Over the last few decades, the spotlight on our sedentary lifestyles at home and in the workplace has grown brighter. Physical inactivity has climbed to the fourth spot on the list of mortality risk factors, and studies are continuing to uncover what happens when we sit too much.
Humans function more efficiently when we are upright, yet today’s conveniences have us planted in our seats. Robots vacuum, delivery services shop, and entertainment is constantly accessible on our devices. Modern society is very different from a generation ago and our bodies are feeling the strain.
Workplace wellness research reveals if we sit too much, a few things happen:
- We burn fewer calories. Fat accumulates. Risks for obesity and type 2 diabetes increase.
- Risks of cardiovasular disease increase. A study found people sitting more than 23 hours/week have a 64% higher risk of cardiovascular disease than those who sat for less than 11 hours a week.
- Sitting puts greater pressure on the back and strains the neck.
- Some forms of cancer has been linked to prolonged sitting. Researchers found elevated levels of a C-reactive protein in sedentary individuals.
- Mental health takes a hit too. Studies have shown greater risks of anxiety and depression in people who sit too much.
And what about workplace stress?
According to The American Institute of Stress, 62% of workers reported that they have “high levels of stress, with extreme fatigue/feeling out of control”. Stress adversely affects employee engagement, increases turnover, and hampers creativity and innovation within an organization.
Steko is the first type of corporate wellness company that integrates group movement breaks into the workday with minimal obstacles. We empower corporations to be the main advocates of mind/body breaks for their employees whether at work or while attending a conference. A corporate culture shift that prioritizes employee mental and physical health could have a profound impact not only on the individual but on the organization as a whole.
A 2023 study from Columbia University Irving Medical Center found that taking five-minute walking breaks every 30 minutes resulted in significant reductions in blood pressure and glucose levels, decreased fatigue, improved mood, and enhanced work quality. A rejuvenated mind is a productive mind.
Our name, “Steko” comes from the Greek verb meaning: stand. That is where we begin. Stand, move, and make a difference with Steko.
